Tunnel of Love in Ukraine
Author: RuleG

Today's (June 20) cover photo for the Bing Internet search engine shows the Tunnel of Love just outside of Klevan in northwest Ukraine.  A short section of railroad is completely surrounded by vegetation (even on top). [Go to the bottom right and scroll to the left if you are coming on to this post within a few days after June 20]

A photo with a train can be found in Ten Most Enchanting Tree Tunnels (Scroll about 3/4 of the way down)

Bing.com states, "When the train isn’t running, the Tunnel of Love, as it’s come to be known, is a favorite spot for couples to take a romantic stroll, embraced by nature. Local lore holds that couples can make a wish while walking through the tunnel and it will come true."

Thanks! The foliage is still there it looks like...wonder how they maintain the rail line. Of course maintenance might be minimal at the current state of war between Ukraine and Russia.

UZ infrastructure maintenance, outside of war zones and Crimea, is fairly decent.   Last August, the quality of the ride between Kiev and Lvov was better than many spots of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor!!

No intercity travel on the visit this past May however......the planned trip to Odessa didn't materialize due to sold out tickets and family affairs.

P.S.  The famous line in question is, I think, a lightly used branch line.

Agreed on ride quality. All my overnight trips in Ukraine (to Lviv and Moscow) the tracks are better than many here. Perhaps broad gauge has something to do with it.

Somehow I doubt that the 3.35-inch difference in gauge is responsible.

As info, the first problem with that photo is that it is NOT of any Ukrainian train. The train coming down that track look's to be led by a GE UM-12C diesel of the SRT, which is the State Railway of Thailand. So, seems to be a seriously wrong caption, and makes me wonder about any of the other captions on that page.......

Holy crap, wow....I missed that entirely!!

It's def not Ukrainian rolling stock there.

But to be fair, there IS a similar thing in Ukraine:

TGM23b, Pansovietic model for those who might be interested in this little switcher. At least Kehra, Estonia and this spring Riga, Latvia had these in use. All are parked waiting for different times or, sadly, torch. Unlike many Russian built contraptions, this is a diesel-hydraulic model.
