European Railroad Discussion > narrow gauge at MallorcaDate: 07/08/15 10:24 narrow gauge at Mallorca Author: sventomas Recently I spent a week on the sunny island. Wednesday was spent travelling by train! Yes there are a public network partly electrified from Palma to Inca and further to Manacor and to Sa Pobla.
But the main attraction is the 35 km Ferrocarril de Sóller. In Summertime 6there are 6 departures from Palma and return. The rolling stock is well maintained original wooden coaches with open platform. The end terminal in Sóller has grown-up trees in the yard (gives a good shadow from a unmerciful sun). Trams run all day in connection with the train and you disembark on the beach with restaurants on the streetside.
Tom Date: 07/08/15 10:36 Re: narrow gauge at Mallorca Author: sventomas The contrast between climbing the mountain-range, going through tunnels of which the longest is 2 Miles, and end up in Palma with a couple of miles streetrunning (at rush hour) is impressive.
If you visit Mallorca spend at least one day railfanning! Tom Date: 07/08/15 12:15 Re: narrow gauge at Mallorca Author: McKey Incredible find, thank you for sharing Sventomas! Looks almost like the Roslagsbana old rolling stock was shipped here ;)
