Rolling Down the Rhine

The Rhine in Germany is justly famous with tourists for castles and a scenery.  However, the faithful should understand it has DB mainlines on both banks.  Here are some examples taken this spring.

On a brief cruise there in 1973 I saw and heard many diesel barges that made a "ka-pockta ka-pockata" sound.
During lunch I heard more and when I looked up it wasn't a barge but a DB 2-10-0 making almost the same exhaust sound, sharp and crisp, hauling a long string of coal.
Focused my attention for the rest of the trip, but the only other steam I saw working was near Venice on commuter trains.
