More 68s
Author: 86235

I must admit the new DRS-acquired Vossloh/Caterpillar class 68s are growing on me. Here are three more pictures I took of them this week

68009 Titan, one of those in DRS 'Compass' livery but doing duty with Chiltern on the 17:50 Marylebone to Banbury passing King's Sutton in Northamptonshire, a few miles from journey's end, taken last Wednesday Augsut 12th

Also taken on Wednesday evening, 68011 on the 18:47 Marylebone to Kidderminster which pulled into Banbury four minutes early at 19:44. Banbury South box (together with Banbury North) and the semaphores are living on borrowed time I'm afraid to say

Taken this morning, 68014 pushing the 07:12 Kidderminster to Marylebone on the climb from Aynho Junction to Aynho Park

Lots more stuff from the last week

I feel they look quite respectable, especially when all three main headlamps are lit.

Any word when the hybrids from Vossloh will arrive? Those should be technically interesting...

They've been designated class 88 and are due to arrive in 2016. They are a 4MW electric loco with a 710kW auxiliary diesel for last mile capability, presumably they will take over DRS intermodal services from Scotland to the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT) in the Midlands.

Thanks for update! I suppose 2,8 MW / 3755 hp on diesel should be OK for more than usage on the last mile as British Class 66 has 2,6 MW / 3300 hp? Kilonewtonage also seems to be well above that of class 66.

Oops, power appears to be just 0,7 MW in duel mode for 88...

The diesel is mainly for last mile, but also for use in an emergency when, say, there are power supply problems, but not very far, or very fast or on a substantial grade.

I suppose it is still not enough to run a full sized freight train, but this is substantially more than is used on Bombardier TRAXX F140 AC3 LM and equivalent Siemens Vectron AC64 LM, both of which are already in use.

And we are still so very far from what Bombardier ALP-45DP can offer: 2900 kW / 3600 hp, albeit with "just" 316 kN to move the train.

In the picture one of the ALP-45DP units.
