I find this one very hard to believe. It would be an amazing find, not only for the contents but for the train itself, imagine what kind of museum exhibit it could make.

But how do you hide something that big for so long? Unless the rail line it was on was never rebuilt after the war, and no one thought to look inside what may be a collapsed tunnel, for that long. If you were a treasure hunter you'd be pouring over maps of rail lines in the suspected area, locating tunnels and digging into them. All of which should have happened a long time ago, not now.

Yes, Mike, could be another bit of new hype like the stupid shapes of rock on Mars.

It has been officially confirmed today that it exists.  the contents are yet to be discovered.   It would interestest to see what else is in those tunnels and where others are.

Since this story has appeared for years in media, it would finally be interesting to see pictures of the actual train, not just rumors...

These ornaments were used to decorate the fronts of certain modern German electric locomotives in the 1930s (e.g.: E 19).  I once read in a German railfan magazine they were referred to as "pleitegeiers" (bankruptcy vultures).

What an interesting use and naming of the figure! Would you have more information of what the meaning of "Pleitgeiers" was, I can think of it two opposite ways?

This class 43 is located as a silent stationary memorial in front of one of the Nazi bunkers in Emden, Germany.

I believe it is some kind of long-running meme from German political cartoons.

Great digging of info. The use looks almost like being from the "time of kings" in Germany...

Since this is something that was given away only when the last of troops hiding it was dying, I wonder what will be found there along with the train? Maybe 100 killed Polish slave workers who helped digging the cave and took the train there? Those were truly rough times for both sides in war...

Regarding the meaning of "pleitgeiers", it can also be used as "bust vulture" like in the front of, or a woman's breasts. My guess is that it wasn't meant as bankruptcy, as the above translation would make more sense.

That's a possibility as slave labor (concentration camp captives) were often used in the underground factories too. Incidentally, (this is a conjecture on my part, but, if they did use the slave labor, they might have burried them with the train so none of them could live to talk.)

I spoke with dad about the underground aircraft factory I saw as a child referenced in this thread earlier. (I saw one of the bricked over entrance-ways.) Anyway, dad affirms that it was booby-trapped by the Germans and that it is in the vacinity of Murnau, Germany. He also states that there is a village on top of the mountain and a church that workers used to access the factory through an elevator shaft.  It is interesting to note that some of these underground factories were used to manufacture parts for the pioneering jet airplane developed by the Germans towards the end of the war.
