Peloponnes Metre Gauge Rusts in Greece
Author: cozephyr

September 12, 2015 found the Greek Railway metre gauge line abandoned in 2011 mostly in place.  Their tale...The old metre gauge Piraeus - Patras rail line of Piraeus, Athens and Peloponnese Railways, which ran from Piraeus, Athens to Corinth, ceased operation in 2011.  The track from Piraeus to Agioi Anargyroi has been removed.  It was double-track between Agioi Anargyroi and Elefsis, while for the rest of its remaining section was single track and non-electrified.  After Ano Liosia, the line ran north and west of the Aegaleo mountain range into Eleusis (Eflefsis) and onwards to the Megara plain.  After nine km it reaches Kakia Skala, running between the old National Highway and new toll highways.  It then continues between the mountain and the sea (Saronic Gulf), passing next to the Corinth Refinery, crossing the Corinth Canal into the Peloponnese and on into the Old Station in Corinth on the Southern banks of the Gulf of Corinth.

The double track electrified line diving into the tunnel is known as Proastiakos (Greek: Προαστιακός, English: 'suburban').  This is the collective name for Greece's suburban (commuter rail) services, which are run by TrainOSE, the country's only rail operator, on infrastructure owned by the Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE).
In Athens, the Proastiakos offers a direct connection between Athens International Airport and Kiato, in the Peloponnese. The service also connects the port of Piraeus with Halkida in Evia, through Athens Railway Station, which is more commonly called Stathmos Larisis.
On the 27th of September 2005, the new standard gauge rail line reached Corinth, terminating at a new station, located at Examilia.  This line today is served by "Proastiakos" suburban services, while initially "Proastiakos" trains stopped at Nea Peramos, Megara, Kinetta and Agioi Theodoroi.  On 18 July 2006 three new stations were added: Ano Liosia, Aspropyrgos and Magoula.  On 4 June 2007 the line was extended from Athens to the port of Piraeus with 3 intermediate stations at Lefka, Rentis and Rouf.  This extension linked the airport with the port of Piraeus.  On the 9 July 2007, Proastiakos services reached the new station at Kiato, Greece.

Note European Union influence - high construction standard(s) with electric overhead.  Infractstructure on this line is an immense improvement over the old metre gauge operation.
