Steam and Snow
Author: dwatry

I ventured out early on Saturday 21 Nov to catch 61306 on an excursion out of Euston to Chester.   Surprise, surprise - it started snowing!    Don't get much snow like this in the SF Bay Area, so it was kind of a novelty for me.
1.  61306 (Mayflower) passing South Kenton
2.  Same - going-away shot.  Love those Mk I coaches!
3.  Clash of eras - Virgin Trains overtaking 61306.

Thanks for this set of photos! I am a great fan of the LN ER, and I love their locomotives. wag216 (a Kansas fan, but would like to be in Scotland!)

I think the steam loco is a 4-6-0, not a Pacific.

Look ma, no diesel! No speed restriction. No safety vest in the cab. No water tender. It can be done. Perfect.

I agree, but it is worth noting that an overall speed limit of 75 or 60mph applies to most UK mainline steam locos. no water tender means more frequent and extended water stops, and a diesel is sometimes placed at the back (as on this train I believe) if only for providing HEP in the winter.

Correct - there was a diesel on the rear.  Sorry to destroy the illusion.
4.  Diesel on rear (Class 47 maybe?).

Different countries, different rules.

Ah, but are the different rules justified by different conditions, or do they arise simply because of differing anxieties or obsessions?
If so they can at least be questioned.

The FRA makes rules for a number of reasons. Some rules are imposed by another agency (Reflective Vests - OSHA), some are NTSB reccomendations and some may even be requested by the railroads themselves.

Have you met Hercule Poirot on the train? :)
