Early morning at Camden Road
Author: 86235

This morning was sunny and cold, ideal for a bike ride. I rode down to Camden Road for two of the three freight trains which were scheduled to pass through the station between 08:30 and 10:00.

First off was an STP working of a containerised waste train from Brentford in West London to Scunthorpe, some 180 miles north where the old iron ore open cast pits are being filled in with non-recyclable waste. The train was hauled by 66172 and consisted of 26 flats carrying 78 1TEU waste containers.

Whilst I was waiting a robin was singing its heart out next to platform 1, the bushes having grown on what had been the right of way of the freight lines through Camden Road which were taken out in the 1980s.

It was followed some 20 minutes later by a pair of Cans (class 86s) on the 4L89 Coatbridge to Felixstowe. Freightliner have certainly got their money's worth from these elderly motors, 86639 first saw the light of day at the Vulcan Foundry in May 1966, which will make her 50 next year.

Great stuff - wonderful pictures at a superb location. I was doing our shopping (nice and early) at Morrisons when I saw the same Freightliner train - it's a shame they run so slowly over this stretch of line, but at least they then seem very long!
Are there any trains from the west coast via Gospel Oak (the divergent route on the right) at weekends, and if so are they electric?

The previous train, from Acton to Scunthorpe, and the subsequent train (Bow to Acton) were routed via Gospel Oak. Neither go to the WCML though, crossing it at Willesden Junction High Level. The Dollands Moor to Scunthorpe empty steel, which runs on both Saturday and Sunday, is also routed via Gospel Oak, but is no longer 92 hauled unfortunately.

Thanks. It's called a feather and they light along with the yellow, two yellows or green aspect to denote a diverging route.
