London "Mail Rail" to be opened to the public
Author: JPB

Today's UK rail news tidbit comes not from my favorite source for UK news, The Telegraph, but from CNN web site. Question: the CNN article, which has 10 interesting photos, says the system was "fully automated" but the Wikipedia article says the system was driverless. I'm assuming the train(s) were actually operated manually but remotely from some sort of central console?

I can't recall the exact cirumstances but it was during a canal(?) festival in London in the early 1980s, but the Post Office opened up the station underneath the KIng Edward building near St Pauls to enable the public to see the Post Office railway in action. It was automated in the sense there were no drivers, once a train had been unloaded/loaded the despatcher on the platform pressed a button which I think told the control room to energise the conductor rail, and off the train went.

I went on a guided tour of "Mail Rail" at Mount Pleasant sorting office on Nov 18th 1987. Upon leaving, I saw fire engines and ambulances everywhere. It was the night of the serious fire at Kings Cross Underground station, when more than 30 perished
