European Railroad Discussion > DB Class 44 steam engine and semaphores, approaching RheineDate: 04/17/16 19:27 DB Class 44 steam engine and semaphores, approaching Rheine Author: eminence_grise This image taken in 1969 shows a DB coal train behind a pair of steam locomotives approaching the station and yard at Rheine, Germany.
The train will take an "avoiding line" which diverts through freight traffic around the terminal facilities. During the day I spent there with a German railfan, a steady stream of coal trains used this line to pass through town. Checking a website, the semaphore is displaying green over yellow which is "proceed at reduced speed, not exceeding 40 kph" Beside the semaphore is a disk signal, displaying the yellow disk in the "off" (non visible) position and a green light. This in an advance signal, indicating that the signals at the next control point are showing a proceed indication. Any other information on this signal system would be appreciated.
