Switzerland: Travelling around/down the Brusio Circular Viaduct
Author: Stephenloco

Had the pleasure of travelling on the Rhaetian Railway's Bernina line between Pontresina (near St Moritz) & Tirano, just across the border in Italy, this past Sunday.

Here's a short video of my train travelling down/around the Brusio Circular Circular or Spiral Viaduct, or as it is called in this Italian speaking part of Switzerland; "Viadotto Elicoidale di Brusio"

The trip from St Moritz to Tirano across the Bernina Pass is my favourite rail journey of all the trips I've had the pleasure of experiencing.  It is a fantastic journey no matter what the season.  On this trip beautiful spring colours on the south side of the pass (towards Tirano, Italy), but still snowy & frozen on the pass itself.

Most impressive, thanks for sharing. Does anybody know how steep the grade is going over the viaduct?

The Viadukt is about 2.1% Compensated for curvature, on either side of the Viadukt the grade is 7.0%.

The ruling grade on the Berninabahn is 7 percent and it is not a rack railroad.  The curve radius on the Brusio Loop is 100 meters or about 330 feet.  The new Allegra three section emus built by Stadler can pull a combination of 8 coaches and/or loaded freight cars up those grades.

Yes, there are FS services to Sondrio & Milano Centrale.  However the quality of rollingstock is considerably different - dirty & grafitti covered.

In the FS Tirano yard is a small locomotive depot with at least one steam locomotive & some other historic rollingstock.
