European Railroad Discussion > DARTing around DublinDate: 05/12/16 15:02 DARTing around Dublin Author: dwatry Sorry, couldn't resist that bad pun. Spent the weekend in Dublin, and managed to do a little DART riding as well as riding the Luas light rail. Rode the entire Luas Green line, which goes south through Dublin's Silicon Valley. It is constructed largely on the right-of-way of the former CIE line known as the Harcourt Street Railway, which was abandoned in 1958 and preserved for future use. It makes for an interesting mix of modern light rail running on some old stone viaducts. Clash of eras!
The Irish mainline rail system is owned by Iarnrod Eireann (IE). Track gauge is the unusual gauge of 5'3" (1600mm). I believe the only other places that use this gauge are Victoria state in Australia and in Sao Paulo in Brazil. 1. Northbound DART Tokyu trainset at Black Rock Station. 2.
