European Railroad Discussion > It's on, it's off, it's on againDate: 05/15/16 00:13 It's on, it's off, it's on again Author: 86235 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-south-scotland-36292974
You couldn't make it up. After two years of planning late on Friday Network Rail banned Flying Scotsman from the Borders Railway and the Fife Circle, citing 'gauging' issues. The internet (over here) went berserk with all sorts of conspiracy theories being advanced; Network Rail 'hated' Flying Scotsman, there was a shadowy cabal within Network Rail that wanted 'revenge' on West Coast Railway Company, I was waiting for some one to link ISIS into the fiasco. Yesterday, after the Scottish Government got involved, Network Rail relented and Mark Carne, the CEO, offered an apology. I wonder whether the NR Chairman, Sir Peter Hendy, late of Transport for London, who is a pretty savvy operator, saw this for the PR disaster it was and told his top team to get a grip, so today 60103 should make it to Tweedbank and over the Forth Bridge and round the Fife Circle. And Network used the gauging issues as an excuse to cancel? Someone needs to understand that patrons plan these trips well in advance. Some traveling from long distances with non-refundable fares to get there. Sure mechanical issues happen. But this was a man made cancellation. Glad things worked out in the end. And hope idiots keep off the linside this time.
