Week in the East - Part 5 - Riga Port
Author: dwatry

In Riga our hotel was near the Port, so I wandered over there a few times and discovered some interesting railroading serving the big export business - mostly coal and lumber.  There is a large yard mostly full of large coal gondolas that closely resemble the old Virginian Railway's battleship gondolas, being switched by 2 or 3 of the Czech-built road switchers, that I think are classed as CHME3.  I'm not sure where the coal comes from, but the gondolas are lettered in Cyrillic that translates as "Novotrans", so could come from Russia, Belarus, or Ukraine.

1. 2M62 loco set with train of scrap metal.
2.  Same train shoving back into yard.
3.  View of yard with CHME3 switching coal cars.

A few what we used to call "effect shots".
7.  In the long summer dusk - you can still shoot photos until 1030 or 11pm!  S ome younger folks coming back from a bar pass a CHME3.
8.  Lumber transfer going on late into the evening.
9.  Yard view.
