As soon as we pulled into Ilfeld on the Duo Tram the steam powered trip to Nordhausen pulled in the other way. There is only one steam operated trip leaving Nordhausen in the morning. It goes to Brocken and returns in the evening. A Duo Tram and a steam train together, kinda interesting I guess. The HSB survived in part due the road conditions being very bad during the East Germany era. Although the roads have improved the steam trains still operate although with less local passengers.

The steam trains on the HSB remind me off the Isle of Man steam railway. There are still local people riding but it is mainly tourists and railfans. I would like to have seen the HSB about twenty years ago when it was still the main way of gettting around the Harz Mountains.
