UK Heritage Railway Tour - Questions
Author: LJGross

I am considering a visit to the UK October 14 to 23 with the primary goal of visiting steam-powered heritage railways plus possibly a mainline trip.  I'm more interested in lineside photography versus riding but ideally would look for a mix.  Is late October too late in the season, especially for mid-week activity?  In particular I am interested in the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highlands with a goal of lensing one of those baby South African Garratts in action.  Any advice on the feasibility of such a trip as well as must-see stops would be appreciated.

Have you looked at the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland timetables? They normally operate until the end of October

For mainline steam you need to consult the steam info website

Depending on where you are based there are numerous other heritage operations which will have weekend service at least, but possibly weekday service too during the week 24th to 28th October which is the half term school holiday in much of England & Wales.

This year has not been a good one for mainline steam.   There have been a number of cancellations or examples of diesel haulage often at the very last moment.
