Question on My Ride from Bologna to Ravenna Today

Great ride from Bologna to Ravenna and return today. This retired US railroader has a question though. At all the stations the platform track rails were painted white on the web. Why? All I could think of was a visual cue to the engineer on clearance points as the paint extended beyond the station platforms. Explanations appreciated.

I believe it's a lime wash disinfectant.
