As the Agent, Milledgeville, Illinois CB&Q Depot, 1964
Author: MartyBernard

Milledgeville is a small town (population 1032) on the CB&Q in northwest Illinois near Savanna. The railroad came to town in 1886.

In the summer of 1964 I spent two weeks there as the agent there filling in for the vacationing agent. Working for the Q for a couple of summers sure helped finance my college education. Yes, a railfan's dream with not much to do but listen to the dispatcher's line.

No trains stopped at Milledgeville except a local freight. Actually I was the half-time agent. The other half of the day I was down the road as the agent at the depot in Chadwick, IL (population 551).

I think the pictures describe themselves. The depot was an office trailer. The fourth picture below is probably of the original depot (from the Town's Home Page: http://www.milledgevilleil.net/index.html).

Do Chadwick and Milledgeville have staffed depots today? I doubt it.

I hope you enjoyed this little side light.

Oregon's is still standing in place, undergoing restoration. Polo's, Milledgeville's and Chadwick's are gone.

KC - still impressed you worked at Mt. Morris!

Looks like a framed picture of JFK hanging on the wall.

Marty,

Thanks for all of the Q pics and especially these from Milledgeville. They bring back a lot of good memories.

Marty, you should put together a show for the NWI-NRHS chapter in Rockford of your Q memories. They'd love it!

I was at Milledgeville on Saturday to catch the CN 5556 East and was pleasantly surprised to still see Milledgeville's "depot" trailer still standing. I don't think I would have taken the picture had I not seen this thread last week. Anywho, I thought Marty, you'd appreciate that the BN or BNSF actually added onto it! Appears to be used by the signal department now.
