AFT Maps Washington DC Loco Moves

Bonus Maps!
Both the T-1 and the 4449 were in Washington DC to hand off the AFT from the former to the latter. These two maps are of the routes the locomotives took to (4449) and from (T-1) Washington before and after the AFT's display at The Pentagon.

The 4449 had been waiting in Birmingham AL while the Freedom Train toured the NE with the T-1. The move from Birmingham to Washington was done as a two day (Atlanta to Alexandria) excursion with the Southern Railway.
On August 26, 1976 the '49 moved the excursion train from Birmingham to Atlanta GA in a deadhead move- no tickets were sold. The excursion itself was a two day trip on August 28-29, 1976, with an over-night layover in Salisbury, NC.
This was the first chance the general public had to ride behind the 4449 since her last days of service on the SP back in 1956.
The AFT would not arrive in Washington until September 24.

The T-1 left Washington DC on September 29, 1976 on a deadhead move to Lebanon NJ. (The AFT itself would leave DC at 2am the next morning) The entire run was acomplished I one long 12 hour day. They pulled only a Conrail (former PRR N5c) caboose as a rider car for the crew.
The T-1 now carried The High Iron Company lettering on her sand dome, reflecting Ross Rowland's ownership.
