They'll be gone before you know it. Hope it has been as enjoyable a career as it was for me.

Retirement is like Saturday everyday. Because you have to work on Friday and Sunday you have to get ready for work on Monday. Saturday is a free day. You're going love retirement.

It has been 27 years since I have been behind the throttle and can still remember that last day as if it were yesterday...
and I still miss  pulling the throttle and some of the "guys"...

If you end up missing it, find a local rail museum and go volunteer. Lots of people are looking for good, reliable help. I've always loved being an engineer. It's the railroad that makes it not fun. You can have fun again AND make folks smile too.

Happy retirement!

Joe

I called an old head friend of mine after he retired and he said that it was pretty nice..."I have my basic day in as soon as my feet hit the floor when I roll out of bed!" he said.  He didn't stay away too long--he took a railroad contractor's job to be a flagman at construction sites on shortlines for a while...just to get out of the house.
Joey's right--find a museum where you can share your skills with some willing parties.  You can still "play railroad" when YOUR schedule dictates...and can always markoff on a rainy day!

Congrats on making it--we should all be so lucky.

Need the "Shortimers Calender" to go along with the "countdown".  Ben

We had a dry-erase board for my husband's short-time calendar. Son and I put up a big fat zero on it almost a year ago and have never had the heart to use it for anything else. I thought he might get bored, but he's had no regrets.

Get ready to enjoy yourself!

My last day was 8 week ago and I have not missed it ONE day! ! ! ! !

We moved across country back to Oregon and I have had something (fun) to do almost every day.

Planning on spending tomorrow (Saturday) foaming with my lifelong friend (since 1959).

That's what I did.  Myself and a couple of other retirees found the Nevada Southern at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Boulder City.  And it's great!

I retired 4 months ago after 39 years and don't even watch trains passing through anymore. I like the older stuff and enjoy trains in RR museums but it takes a while for retirement to soak in and realize you  can waste time and really enjoy a project or something fun. Having a lot of other interests will keep you from burning out on the hobby too. I retired on the first day I could  even though we have to wait a bit for my wife to catch up to my age.  I  found out people are easy to make friends with away from the RR because you have time to do that too. I always enjoyed running the train and did not really care or give much thought to all the BS when I was there. The time you have left on the RR should be enjoyed and make a few memories of your last days to take with you.
Wishing all the best on the upcoming date,
Tom

____ I'm a*single digit midget*.....LOL....as was pointed out...
