Railroaders' Nostalgia > Historic Crossing Gate in East OaklandDate: 09/22/15 11:20 Historic Crossing Gate in East Oakland Author: KeyRouteKen WIGWAG question:

To the immediate East is where the BART Yard would eventually be ! The former tracks of the IER ran right behind the old City of Oakland corp yard buildings and then across the trestle over the Estuary stream from Lake Merrit.. That area of 5th Avenue would have been right between the Nimitz Freeway and East 8th Street. Here's a clue for this gate location: It was on 5th Avenue at "CLINTON" where the SP-IER crossed the WP. Any old rails out there that remember this strange gate ? On 5th Avenue where the double-track electric line of the SP crossed over the mainline of the Western Pacific. SP was in control of CLINTON Tower as well which most fans don't know existed, between Magnolia and Fruitvale.
