Railroaders' Nostalgia > Steam Locomotive Bells Painted Red InsideDate: 06/03/16 11:33 Steam Locomotive Bells Painted Red Inside Author: railroadbill Why? Opinions online are all over the place. Some railroaders day the never saw them painted red inside (Santa Fe, U.P.) and some say they did (Pennsy, and some other eastern roads). All of the bells on the steam locomotives here in the Californmia State Railroad Museum are painted red inside (clappers too). Any ideas out there?

Not only for those who might be hearing-impaired, but maybe for a switchman/brakeman who may too far awy to hear it to know when the train starts moving. In many cases the bell was located where you would not be able to see the red inside when it was ringing (i.e. between the steam and sand domes). We have some docents in the Calif. State RR Museum who worked for the S.P. I'll see if they know why.

Red paint was NOT for visibility. It used to be lead based paint - to protect against corrosion. (in many cases, the bell is located behind a balloon stack or between a steam and sand dome - visibility??) That answer is from a very senior Southern Pacific steam locomotive engineer.
