Rock Utica Illinois depot wrecked by tornado
Author: PumpkinHogger

Happened yesterday, far more important of course are the eight lives lost as the massive tornado passed right through the middle of the town of 1,000 or so in central Illinois about this time last night.

This is/was a CSX owned structure, is still standing, but heavily damaged. According to a source the MOW people said it is going to be razed.

Can't recall the depot but the town of Utica as well as the surrounding communities have some great bars and restaurants! Always nice to pass through this town on the way to Starved Rock State Park....

Is this the depot you are talking about? Just happened to be driving around Ill. A couple years ago and got 3 shots of it. Jim

Yeah Jim, that's the one. Sad news, indeed! However, a friend stated that he thought this would be the first RI depot in Illinois to be razed since 1980 -- luckily, there are still a bunch out there, along with a few other RI artifacts.

How many trains does the CSX operate along these tracks? Where does the CSX trackage end?

CSX territory goes as far west as Bureau, and local operations are based at Ottawa, Ill. The B&O picked up this hunk of the Rock after the bankruptcy.

At Bureau the line heads south to Henry, Il. This is the end of CSX trackage. West of Bureau is IAIS trackage.

Working west from Joliet, there are a number of locals based in Rockdale, Seneca, Ottawa and I think Bureau. In fact, I observed a local Tuesday (same day as the tornado) east of Ottawa with two CSX GP15's. Primary business along this line is silica sand from Ottawa and other locations. There are also some chemical plants and grain transloading facilities. CSX runs one big train from Ottawa to Barr Yard in Blue Island. This train generally runs at night.
