Eastern Railroad Discussion > CSX 3003 BQ23-7Date: 08/04/05 20:12 CSX 3003 BQ23-7 Author: Thoroughbred-Ed Hi Everyone:
I photograph CSX 3003 BQ23-7 in Fostoria, Ohio back in Sept. 1994 Need some information on this guy. What was the number series in CSX ? Looks like CSX made these into slugs units as the windows are covered. How many were built and when CSX stop using them ? I believe they all came from the SCL., is this true or did L&N have some, Number series in SCL and L&N would be helpful. When were they built. ? Thanks Eddie Durnwald Fostoria, Ohio http://www.eddiedurnwald.com Date: 08/04/05 21:44 Re: CSX 3003 BQ23-7 Author: MuskBlock CSX 3000-3009, former SCL 5130-5139. They were built in 1978/1979 and wore the Family Lines paint scheme until CSX. They were converted into "B" units in the early/mid-90's. They kept their prime movers but the cabs were isolated. UP, CP, and Santa FE had similar concepts. Santa Fe's GP60B's are engines with no cabs; which is pretty much what a "B" unit is. These 10 units were the only ones built, a product of SCL. None are active today.

For this great information! Eddie11 Date: 08/05/05 08:21 Re: Slug vs. B-unit Author: toledopatch MuskBlock alluded to this, but wasn't explicit about it: the BQ23-7's were not converted to "slugs" -- they became "B" units. As MuskBlock indicated, the difference is that slugs don't have engines in them -- they draw their electric power from the prime mover in the "mother" unit.
I write this only to make the difference clear to others who may be reading. Date: 08/05/05 08:44 Re: Slug vs. B-unit Author: DJ-12 They also win my nomination for ugliest locomotive ever constructed. Ugggh.
Date: 08/05/05 11:22 Re: Slug vs. B-unit Author: AmericanLines I believe that they are all scrapped. Is that correct?
Last ones I saw was the 3004 and 3006 in Birmingham in 2002 heading to Albertville AL for scrap. Date: 08/08/05 07:12 Re: Slug vs. B-unit Author: jch9596 I can't believe that any lasted until 2002. Were they stored somewhere for a long time? They *are* dang ugly, but I would have loved to catch them when they were running around.
