Eastern Railroad Discussion > Locomotive Fuel Usage QuestionDate: 12/20/06 18:07 Locomotive Fuel Usage Question Author: SW1200 Does anyone know what the fuel usage rate is for an EMD 12-567 at say idle, notch 1 and notch 2? How many gallons per hour? Anybody have a good on-line resource for this type of info?
Thanks. SW1200 Date: 12/20/06 18:52 Re: Locomotive Fuel Usage Question Author: NSDash9 I have the following for an EMD SW1200 equipped with a 12-cylinder 567C engine:
2.5 gallons of fuel an hour at idle 70 gallons per hour at full load Chris Toth NSDash9.com Date: 12/20/06 19:49 Re: Locomotive Fuel Usage Question Author: scapegoat 12-567C 3.5 to 4.5 hours at idle. 3.5 being a perfect world number. 4 is a good average. Can go to 5 if weather is really hot or cold and filters not clean or injection not set up right. Our 645 packed 12 cylinders when set up right don't use much more than the 567's maybe half to one gallon an hour. The owner likes to know these numbers so we watch them pretty close.

Any chance you could tell me your source? I might need it for a reference. SW1200 Date: 12/21/06 13:31 Re: Locomotive Fuel Usage Question Author: Pj I think Al Krug's site had some numbers up there. I'm mobile right now so I don't have the link handy. Do a search of Al Krug or AAK (username)

------------------------------------------------------- > Take a look at > http://www.alkrug.vcn.com/rrfacts/fueluse.htm. The top line says..... "A coal train moving uphill at 11mph with 4 SD40-2 locos on the point and a 2 loco helper shoving on the rear has a fuel efficiency of about 48 feet per gallon. " Just for comparison, a 12,000 ton capacity ocean tug/bulk coal barge unit, with a single 6000 HP tug pushing, at sea, moving at 10 knots (11.16 MPH) travels 222.99 ft/gal of fuel used, or almost 5 times as fuel efficient. If the tug was trying to lift the ship up a 2 percent gradient, it wouldn't be any more efficient. Try comparing a coal train at 50 mph on flat land, where it could be easily moved by two SD-70s. It would get about 660 feet on each gallon of fuel, or about three times as efficient as the ship. |
