Defect Detector near Callahan, FL
Author: K3HX

CSX has a defect detector at MP 619.5 which speaks: "milepost six-one-NINER point five."

Passing trains have their length spoken as an example: "three-one-NINER-six."

This, of course, begs the question:

"What's the vector, Victor?"

I'm not joking and don't call me Shirley.

Be well,

Tim Colbert K3HX

PS For those who may have missed the references, rent a DVD of "Airplane!"

Military uses "niner" in radio communications to avoid confusion between "five" and "nine", especially if the radio reception is not as well as desired.

Actually, the reason "niner" is used in aviation is due to the fact the "nine" means "NO" to folks who speak German.

I just heard this DD for the first time the other night at Folkston...It was quite intresting to hear another defect detector out there, and it was a different voice than the Bouglone or Hauge DD..Oh well, just another "warning" that train is approaching.

The ones CSX has used in recent years (like the ones across the B&O in Indiana/Ohio
after the rebuild) need to have 9 say niner...5 and 9 sound almost the same.

You can also hear NS's DD at Folkston.
