NS HO35

Something a bit different from the Harrisburg area today......

NS operates a Monday-Friday job from Enola Yard to the Mittal Steel plant in Steelton, a few miles south of Harrisburg. The job normally operates with a pair of 4-axle units, departing the west end of Enola late-morning, then crosses the Rockville Bridge making a 180-degree turn to operate through Harrisburg. After passing by Harris tower, it takes the Paxton Industrial track at CP-PAXTON, and crosses busy Paxton Street just south of downtown Harrisburg to access the plant three miles south of there.

Photos #1 and #2 show the HO35 crossing the Susquehanna River on the Rockville Bridge after departing the west end of Enola Yard.

Today's HO35 power was NS GP59 4637 and former Conrail SW1500 2214. Mittal Steel's Steelton plant primarily produces rail...one of only 2 U.S. steel plants currently making rail. The job usually moves 20-50 cars daily, mainly gons of scrap steel and flat cars for stick rail. Occasionally there will be unit train cars for CWR moved by the 35, and today was one of those days, with 28 empty CWR cars on the rear following regular 48 cars.

Photo #3 shows the job heading east on the main alongside Harrisburg Yard approaching the fuel pad.

In photo #4, the 35 has left the main and is crossing Paxton St. Seconds before this photo was shot, one of Harrisburg's finest cab drivers pulled across the crossing literally 10 feet in front of the train.
