Hulchers in Deshler
Author: EL-SD45-3632

I drove through Deshler last night and noticed several trucks from Hulchers with the "sideboom" crawlers being reloaded on the flat beds. There were also several CSX block trucks there at the scene.

I did not see any cars laying around to show a derailment had happened during the day, so, what was up? Anyone know? Also, In the yard there was a GE junker standing by for some reason.

thanks.

Maybe they were there to change out a bum traction motor on the GE?

Dunno if it's related, but I saw 6 Hulcher trucks on I-94 heading east
thru southwest Michigan this morning.

All of that equipment just for a locked axle?

Probably a sideboom on each side of the unit to lift it up and hold it while the truck is being worked on, and another dozer to pull the offending truck out and then lift the truck to get the bad wheel out and put the replacement axle in (then the truck is pushed back under the unit and the sidebooms holding the unit up can set it back down on the truck) . So I'm guessing 3 sidebooms were there and used.

Here is an example of this being done to W&LE SD40-3 3048.

Bet it was a job to release all of the brake rigging and the cables to the truck, in the COLD weather to boot!

Two sidebooms and a tracked loader to pull the wheel set out.
