Steam Excursion...Manassas, VA
Author: cinder

Northbound steam excursion crosses Cannon Branch near the Manassas Regional Airport several decades ago. The concrete bridge was built in 1903, replacing a wooden trestle that was guarded at different times by both North and South forces during the Civil War.

Were the guards supposed to prevent Photoshopping? Looks like the Rebels or the Yanks piled lots of ballast on the rails and mirrored the lettering on the sand dome to confuse the enemy.

Not only that, they moved the throttle and power reverse to the fireman's side.

And, the lead axle is grading off the ballast.

There! That didn't take long did it? Yes I was playing and yes, I had to horizontally flip the "Pere Marquette" ....and yes, she is kicking up a little ballast....and yes the bridge picture was taken Saturday. And damn, I missed the lettering on the dome! But it is sorta purty.

Interesting bushes along the right of way...photoshopus flattops. Indigenous to the area around some steam locomotives that warp the space-time continuum.

Cinder,

Yes it is purdy (pun intended after Bill Purdie)!! It's one of the most realistic manufactured photos I've seen. Perspective is right, proportions seem correct, lighting is consistent, nothing looks off angle. Since I criticized (all in good fun), I tried to get rid of the reversed lettering and throttle linkage, leveled the ballast and redid some of the bushes. Don't have enough skill to tackle the power reverse and the injector.

Looks like you're at least a double threat man - great photos from the air and ground as well.

Well, I wouldn't say that...

I'm confused - it's not April 1rst and there's nothing
to indicate on the photo that it was used with permission
or that it is a hoax other then the errors in Photoshop
and the ficticious engine number association.

Cinder, you can leave it on TO's but please refrain from
posting elsewhere. I'm pretty generous regarding photo
usage but it's rather common knowlege to ask first.

Yes Mitch...I apologize for purloining your image and bastardizing it....It was impulsive....I wanted to see how long it would take to have the hoax uncovered by eagle=eyed rail fans and what they found wrong with the picture, but I certainly should have asked.....It won't go anywhere else and I will remove it from here if you wish.

Mitch,

I should have recognized the photo even without the credit, because after seeing the original I certainly recalled it. What's the song say? I guess we were having too much fun, and missed proper ID in the process. Appreciate the reminder and your being tolerant.
