A few NS West Slope pics from last weekend...
Author: dwi189

I was originally scheduled to be out in the Cresson, Pa area for all of last week, when work commitments postponed my vacation until January, when I hope to spend a week shooting snowshots on the mountain...

I was able to make it out on Friday evening and stay until Sunday afternoon.

Saturday turned out lousy weatherwise, and a front brake shoe disintegrated on my car on the trip in, so a friend lent me his tools and garage and we relined my front wheels while rain came down outdoors.

Sunday turned out a bit better....I focused on video this trip, but did manage a few still shots..

An Eastbound NS 26T rolls around the curve at South Fork during a rare cloud-free period this weekend....with a pair of SD40E helpers bringing up the rear....Dave Williams

Clouds still predominated earlier that morning....it was shortly after 7AM on Eastern Standard time at Cresson, when an Eastbound with a burned out ditchlight meets rear helpers on a Westbound manifest...

And the PRR may be gone, but its legacy lives on, as seen on the West approach above Rte 56 to the Johnstown stone arch bridge...

And a pic of the access to the bridge overlook...a park and trail.....The road is a bit rough for a car, but there is sufficient room to park a car or two at the bottom if necessary and walk up....Dave W.

After a sunny mid-morning, the sun started playing hide and seek with afternoon clouds...as a light helper set rolls East into Johnstown....Dave W.

It was 1:20PM on Sunday....and I had remarked that if no trains showed by by 1:30, then we would move on to another spot...

At precisely 1:29PM, an Eastbound NS 20T rolled by...as the sun was hiding...Dave W.

And finally.....as seen from a parking lot in Woodvale, one set of a 4 banger had just cut off the rear of a Westbound slabtrain at Conemaugh....and is seen in the background, as the first set stays on for the ride further West....the train crossed over to Track 1 after dropping that second helper set at CP-C....Up until Sunday, NS 6318 was the newest SD40E rebuild in service....6319 debuted on Monday after I had left for home...Dave Williams.

The masonry piers of the original PRR arch bridge at Johnstown show up nicely in your pictures.

During the great flood of 1889, a mountain of debris and bodies, which subsequently caught fire, piled up on the upstream side of that bridge. There are photos in David McCullogh's book on the johnstown Flood that show the mess at the bridge in gruesome detail.

There is a high water mark plaque on the bridge...I took a pic of it but can't make out the date, even after blowing it up in photoshop...perhaps the high water mark of the 1889 flood or the 1936 flood....The concrete expansion was done after the 1889 flood, but perhaps the plaque was moved or added later....Dave W.

On that first sequence of shots at South Fork -- impressive how much the clouds spread just between the head end and the helpers. Happens that way all too often, but interesting to see it documented...!

You must be referring to the NY Times article on The Station Inn....A few of the frequent guests were mentioned in that article, including myself....Dave W.
