Eastern Railroad Discussion > Winamac and Southern RailroadDate: 12/18/09 13:59 Winamac and Southern Railroad Author: Conraildan2 Was railfanning this shortline on Wednesday and got many nice photos. I also got them on video running from Bringhurst, IN to Logansport. Be sure to check out my videos on youtube:
My screen name on there is Conraildan, so just search for my name if you have to. Date: 12/18/09 14:03 Re: Winamac and Southern Railroad Author: Conraildan2 The above pic was taken at the west end of the ex PRR yard in Logansport. US Rail Corp keeps their two ex UP GP40-2's on the east end of the yard. It was too hard to get a nice pic of them with all the trees in the way. I then headed over to the Wye track that connects with the TPW and the LERR in Logansport. I had heard that the US Rail parks a GP9 there. Well it was no where to be found so i headed south to the end of the line in Bringhurst, IN and found it switching a tank car customer. I then chased it north to Logansport and videoed it along the way. Apparently i cant show the link to youtube on here, so when you search it on youtube look for Winamac and Southern Railroad Part 1
Date: 12/18/09 14:04 Re: Winamac and Southern Railroad Author: Conraildan2 This is the WSRY ex PRR position light signal guarding the diamond with the NS Lafayette line, ex Wabash RR. It appears that only one of the two red lights is working on this day.
Date: 12/18/09 14:06 Re: Winamac and Southern Railroad Author: Conraildan2 Took this pic at Clymers, IN where NS serves this Grain elevator. I guess that is either a GP7 or 9?? It looks to be an ex Pioneer Rail but it had The Anderson's Grain Company written on the cab.

They had to stop so an NS local could pass.
Date: 12/18/09 14:16 Re: Winamac and Southern Railroad Author: Conraildan2 Here is one more pic of WSRY, the ex PRR position light signal at the west end of the Logansport yard. I didnt snoop and poop too much here, so I dont know if it is working or is a dead signal.
Date: 12/18/09 14:19 Re: Winamac and Southern Railroad Author: Conraildan2 One place i wish i would have got a pic of was just down the road at the ex Wabash NS yard where there is an active carshop run by Transco. From what i could see they had an outshop with a transfer table.
i guess this was the former Wabash facilities, can anyone verify or have pictures from the past to show on this forum??? Date: 12/18/09 15:00 Re: Winamac and Southern Railroad Author: CIOR Conraildan2 Wrote:

No, that was the former PRR shops. The Wabash was a minor player here. The PRR had 4 yards, a major yard south of the river and the north of the river was the shops, a large roundhouse and transfer shop. Date: 12/18/09 17:27 Re: Winamac and Southern Railroad Author: CIOR Yes, with all the lines that came into there that the PRR owned. 2 smaller yards, one was at the wye you spoke of and the other was the lines that headed north (Southbend and Butler lines)
As for histories, I can't tell you much more then general stuff. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/18/09 17:28 by CIOR. Date: 12/18/09 17:45 Re: Winamac and Southern Railroad Author: atsf616 Conraildan2 Wrote:

On a single day in Logansport back in August 1971, I observed and photographed: a set of three PC (recently acquired ex-D&RGW) F7s; numerous NYC/PRR Fs; a TP&W SW1500/C424/RS11 lashup; MKT EMD-repowered FA1 89A; and NYC C430 2051, the only example of that model I ever actually saw in service. I was 16 years old, and it remains probably the most eclectic mix of motive power in a single location I have ever seen in my life. Do you have any vintage pictures from the past to share?? Date: 12/18/09 19:04 Re: Winamac and Southern Railroad Author: calumet Conraildan2 Wrote:

Logansport was a VERY big deal for the Pennsy. 1. An ex-Vandalia line came in from the north (So. Bend) and headed south to Frankfort. 2. What is now the TPW was in the old days a Pennsy line (TPW ownership stopped at the Illinois border and from there to L'port it was PRR). 3. The double track Pennsy Panhandle from Chicago joined the TPW west of town. On the east side of town the line split, with one main going south to Cincy, the other southeast to Columbus. 4. A PRR branch from Butler, IN entered from the northeast. Nearly all of those lines are gone now. The TPW remains, as does the Vandalia south to Bringhurst and the Panhandle to Kokomo. Ironically, the Wabash is now the big player whereas in the old days it was a bit player. Date: 12/18/09 19:06 Re: Winamac and Southern Railroad Author: atsf616 Conraildan2 Wrote:

Date: 12/18/09 20:43 Re: Winamac and Southern Railroad Author: Conraildan2 Ive found an easier solution to scanning. just take a pic of the photo with your digital camera and upload them into the computer. Scanning always seemed too complicated for me, so this is how i show my old pictures on the computer.
