I'm pretty sure Sheffield Village is on the ex-NKP, which means it shouldn't disrupt too much traffic.

Correct, this is the ex-NKP line. The Chicago line should be unaffected.

Did not think NS had that much traffic in Cleveland area.

The NKP line through Sheffield is indeed pretty sleepy these days, because most of the trains run on the ex-NYC. But as far as NS traffic in the "Cleveland area," it's only just about everything they run between New York or New England and Chicago. So saying NS doesn't have much traffic in Cleveland is sort of like saying Boston is "not much of a college town"....

The train was NS 310, which runs from Bellevue to Buffalo. Dearailed towards the end of the train.

That explains the sand, for sure. #310 usually continues on to Gang Mills Yard, near Corning, and these days carries a gob of fracking sand for the Marcellus Shale gas-drilling boom.

It's interchanged with the Wellsboro And Corning at Gang Mills.

That's true for SOME of the sand. There's also a big unloading operation at the NS Elmira Yard, and a heavy sand interchange with the Lehigh Railroad at Sayre.

There are now two unloading operations in Elmira and Binghamton has a sand terminal also. More are on the way.
