The article does not mention anything about GE leaving Erie. It actually stated 250 new jobs will be created in Erie. Sounds like their locomotive business is doing very well.

Agreed. How on earth do you conclude from the text of this story that GE is pulling locomotive production out of Erie?

Reading comprehension: FAIL. Go back to fourth grade, and do not collect $200.

Edited to add: And here's a link to the full story, which reports thoroughly that the Fort Worth plant represents an expansion of GE's manufacturing capacity, not a relocation, though it's certainly conceivable that railroad orders previously filled by the Erie plant will soon be handled in Texas.

Maybe not moving (yet) but maybe the jobs in Texas are another example of non union labor in the South?

Sounds to me that they are expanding employment at the Erie facility and in addition, opening a branch locomotive facility in Texas.
Long live Erie.

Or maybe there/s a lot of potential business between UP and BNSF down that way.

...and just a short trip to the Port of Houston for export.

General Motors has been making trucks and cars in Texas with UAW employees since the 1950s.

ge is a cost efficient company, they aren't going to build a new plant in tx and leave they erie plant open, the erie plant is on borrowed time once it opens. tx will come up with some fantastic tax deal, not to mention less property taxes, along with the lower
utilities there and not being a union shop also. and the big one it close to mexico where they can move parts manufacturing too.

Did you not read where they had a huge back log of orders and that they were expecting emerging markets to grow as well. As one person mentioned, and I agree, this plant will concentrate of export work. It is, as mentioned, near Houstons port and as such will make overseas shipment much more cost effective. This will allow Erie to concentrate on domestic production. I wonder what the NLRB will have to say about this given their legal proceedings against Boeing for opening a factory in SC?

You have your right to believe that this is what GE will eventually do. You may even be right. But presenting it as fact now is bulls**t.

It will be interesting to see how the workforce is handled at GE-Fort Worth, and whether the unions now representing the Erie workforce will organize the new plant.

1. That building is 'interesting'; it's more of a 'cross dock' distribution bldg for warehousing. And GE has supposedly 'not yet decided" to lease or buy ?
2. What's more interesting than the building is the tract of farmland next door.
3. Not much room for a test rack without crossing public roads at grade.
4. Why build for export in DFW when you could build in Houston ?

My guess: Contract Maintenance and heavy rebuild / upgrade.

Here is a Dallas/Fort Worth Star-Telegram article on the subject...

There is also a discussion over on the Western board...

The article clearly says that they are going to BUILD the locomotives there. Nothing about rebuilding or contract work. The article also states that they are going to EXPAND the facility to about 900000 sq.ft. That would be about double its current size. I would bet that they are buying this building if they are going to expand it so much.

Research of current business climate state by state indicates Texas still holds the #1 position. Pennsylvania is 39th.
Something to consider for future business in PA.

Maybe in the long wrong they'll be bringing locomotives built in China to the port in Texas? <G>, p

Actually, probably not, as GE is an international conglomerate that has manufacturing and customers all over the world.
