Some photos of Pennsylvania Northeastern's two ex-CR/NS GE C39-2's working in Lansdale, Pa this evening. They are as close to barking like a six-axle Alco or MLW as you will get.

This must've been after 6, because when I drove the Lansdale yard about 5:30-6, the GE's weren't even running and had a cut of cars sandwiched between them.

Hopefully they'll run the 8211 up the branch a few times in place of the 5577.

Nice shots Dale, albeit the cloudy weather.

And there are more operating six axle MLW/Alco's than U boats, Dash 7's, and C39-8's!

Very cool stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Why is that signal in picture #1 turned away from the rails? Taken out of service?

Thanks again,

You are correct. That piece of railroad hasn't been actively signalled for quite some time.

This particular taken out switch connected to the many old industrial sidings that are, of course, no longer there. This long out of use track continued down to the Lansdale station where it rejoined the southbound main, serving many old industries including the Lansdale Municipal coal-powered electric plant. The Lansdale "shifter", was kept very busy there back in the day.

Nice catch! While the crews might not have a favorable take on them, I really miss the C39-8's. The last one I shot in revenue service on NS was at Welch, WV on August 5, 2007. Somewhere I've got a series of images taken of the C39 deadline in Roanoke.

Those or any of the C-39's just could not stand the test of time, pure GE junk.

Why such heavy duty locomotives when they knew that the rail in this area was light? A six axle loco is going to eventually destroy the railroad.

The 8590 was 22 years old then. That's a pretty good lifespan for a 6-axle GE.

It is not light rail, it is 130 lb rail, built for 8,000 ton ore trains.

Sweet shot of the NS C39s and CPL signals at Welch. Are those CPLs still there?

I'm not a locomotive freak so could someone define MLW for me? Thanks.
