Savannah, GA Mess
Author: RFandPFan

Q492 encountered a bad order car after passing the defect detector and stopped on the single track near Chatham (just north of Savannah) on the A line. They tried to back up their train and found a broken knuckle 15 cars back from the engines. Right now Amtrak 89 Palmetto is sitting in the siding at Talco, Amtrak 52 Autotrain is sitting on the main south of Savannah station and Amtrak 98 Silver Meteor is sitting in Savannah station. Various CSX freights are also stuck. Looks like they are not going to be moving soon.

Keep us informed of CSX's progress on this matter; Amtrak moves and the through freights to/from the Northeast may begin to be felt as far as Virginia and D.C./Baltimore, as the recent 3-train collision disrupted their east-west mainline (although that one was far more severe in scope). This seems to be a potential substantial delay for Amtrak passengers and time-sensitive intermodal and juice trains, but if that many trains are backing up, they'll likely send a taxi/van or something to assist in getting the freight moving ASAP. (That presumes the area is accessible by CSX vehicle in some safe manner.) I guess that will explain any northbound delays into N.C. and Virginia, however I'm betting they'll get that train going before we know it.

They got it moving around 2am. 98 and 52 went north followed by two intermodals, then the southbound parade began. 89 finally got into Savannah around 3am.
