Of course I have to take the word of the fans in the area. They told me that 32A and 33K were long time Allentown-Croxton trains and 18G and 19G were Conway-Oak Island trains. It wasn't until recently 18G started originating at Allentown.

I just saw 25V this afternoon in Toledo, so there must now be at least some occasion for it go west of Harrisburg. It was a very short train today.

While NS #178 may handle CN interchange from Detroit, I do not believe it is strictly a CN run-through the way #184 is at Toledo.

NS #369 is a turn to Fort Erie, Ontario (ON), not New York.

Is #316 really a Bellevue-Buffalo turn? That's a 250-mile trip one way.

I'm pretty sure CP still runs a #243 over the NS between Detroit and Chicago that runs under a #33T symbol.

Finally, it was my understanding that #31M terminates at IHB's Gibson Yard in Indiana, rather than going all the way to Blue Island Yard in Chicago.

Corrections on any or all of the above welcomed.

Along the same thread can anybody please say where the letter symbols come from. I Know they are division related Is the letter an origin point or a detestation point?

I was just curious and thank you.

The letters in the third position (e.g., 10R, 31M) have no geographic reference that I can identify. NS started using that system during integration of its portion of Conrail because without the letters, it expected to run out of three-digit road symbols.

A letter in the first position can indicate either an extra section or a divisional wayfreight, depending on which letter it is. There have been numerous threads to explain how this works. A train with two letters and two numbers is either a yard job/terminal transfer or a foreign-line train, again depending on the particular letters.

For auto trains, the 18N/11J pair take care of new vehicles from the midwest to Doremus Ave. I believe 18N starts in Bellevue and 11J--mostly empties--ends up in Toledo? Elkhart? (I know it's changed over the years).

Scratch 19A, no longer runs. 316 is not a turn. 25V is daily to Chicago except Sunday, keep in mind you might see a 25V close to Chicago on Sunday but thats Saturdays train
169 is Conway-Sharonville, Oh., 180 Sharonville-Columbus

Anything starting with a 4, 5, or even a 6, is not even worth trying to figure out. These are bulk commodity trains, and the symbols are used provisionally, even more now than ever before. The sales groups have more input into the symbols used now, apparently for billing purposes. Often the customer will make a last-minute request to divert one of their shipments to a different facility than it was originally scheduled to go to. It is a little tougher for us in operations to keep track of, but we can check the scheduled route in the computer very easily. Also, the 900 series, being company-use symbols, are used as-needed. I think they are grouped by train type though; ie, rail, ballast, etc.

I completely agree. The bulk commodity trains are a whole different can of worms. If someone wants to figure out those symbols, all power to them. However, some can be more predictable, especially coal trains. For instance, 732-741 are Memphis, TN(BNSF) - Plant Scherer, GA coal trains. Local freights are also fairly easy to obtain the train info.

18N originates at the Fostoria Mixing Center, I believe. The power could run light down from Bellevue to get there. I'm pretty sure 11J goes up to Detroit. 14T, by the way, makes a stitch from Bellevue down to Fostoria Mixing and back on its way from Detroit to Buffalo.

203 and 204 need the city pairs reversed. 203 runs Rutherford to Atlanta and 204 runs Atlanta to Rutherford.

Here's another fix: last I knew, 38E/39E go to/from Wayne, MI.

There is a "wiki" out there for the railroads. You've got a great list, and through the collaboration here, perhaps the wiki could be updated:

EDIT: I'mm not trying to promote a competitor to Trainorders. I am mentioning another website I have stumbled across that provides a service (train symbols listing) that this site does not specifically provide. So, no disrespect towards Todd & Co. :)

Great list, one note, 308 is a Bellevue train that dies in Portsmouth, it gets split up and makes up the 188, pickup for the 194, and sometimes the 18m. I didn't see train 29g, it doesn't run all the time, but its an empty auto rack train that comes thru P-town and I think it dies in Fostoria.

One question: Years ago 10A/11A carried plenty of manifest daily from Conway to Reading, but the list above shows it cut back to Altoona. My question is how does the traffic for Spring St. get there nowadays? Setoff from one or more manifests that head for downtown Reading? I guess another question would be, If 10A/11A now only go as far as Altoona (if that info is correct), what happens to the traffic on these trains since it obviously is not just for Altoona? Seems like extra work to split up trains there when hump yards exist east and west of there.

Just heard from a source that starting tomorrow, 229 will originate in Columbus, OH. There will be the addition of a #200 operating between Danville and Columbus.

I don't think 123 is running any more, although I've heard rumors that it may start up again.

I believe that traffic moves on one of the other manifests to Enola.
