Huntingdon and Broad Top Mountain
Author: williamtmiller

I am looking for Books, magazine articles and websites that have info
on the Huntingdon and Broad Top Mountain Railroad of south central PA.
I also need a source of info on the PRR Bedford Div. The line that ran
from Holidaysburg down through Bedford to the PA/MD state line north
of Cumberland MD where it connected with the Western Maryand and the
Cumberland and Pennsylvania. {I know Alan Maples the present owner
of the northern end of this line.} (New Everett Railroad)
I thought I might use the H&BTM as the prototype for a new model
railroad.

Thanks for any and all help in advance.

Bill:

I may be of some help to you. My very outdated Everett Railroad Website is at www.pitt.edu/~kdbst15. I'm working on bringing a new version of the site up elsewhere, however that's down the road aways.

The Bedford Branch seems to be fairly ignored. I too am seeking information on it, the original Everett RR, and the H&BTM.

Contact me via Trainorders email and I'll see if I can help you out.

Keith

Railpace did a trainchaser on the Everett a few years ago, I'll see what they have. You might want to see if the Terraserver archive of old survey maps has what you need.

Wasn't a lot of the H&BTM submerged when they constructed Rays Lake? I vaguely recall a picture of Dave Morgan in the H&BTM bone yard with the story of the upcoming abandonment...

There are two books about the Huntingdon & Broadtop Mountain Railroad & Coal Company titled "From Coal To Glory" Volume 1 1852 - 1874 and Volume 2 1874 - 1900. They are by Jon D. Baughman and Ronald L. Morgan. They are copyright 1988. I bought copies in a Bedford, PA bookstore some years ago. The address of the authors was P.O. Box 188, Saxton, PA 16678

the last I heard, Randy Anderson was modeling the H&BTMRR & Coal Co. He did a nice article on it, including prototype information in the Model Railroad Planning 1997 issue. It may still be available from Kalmbach. I beleive his material has also been presented in the NMRA Layout Design Special Interest Group-back issues probably available.

He doesn't have a big layout, but his modeling skills are great.

Well I got some interesting answers so far. BUT nothing I din't
already know. I have met Randy Anderson and his sidekick Tom
Davidson. Randy shared some of his H&BTM info with me. Hopewell
and Riddlesburg are his interest and the Branches in the area.
I have known Ron Morgan for more than 20 years and have purchased
both his books on the H&BTM. I look forword to Vol #3 which will
cover the time period I have the greatest interest in.
I have met Larry Williams one time conductor on the old Everett
Railroad and owner of an ex PRR, H&BTM Caboose that he keeps
in Saxton PA. I understand he has a nice photo collection.
I have stopped in at the restored Everett Depot to look over
the collection of Photo's they have.
I work for a fellow here in the power plant (Jim Rollins)
who was the fireman on the old Everett Railroad and Jim
has shared his photo collection with me.
I met a fellow who lives in Riddlesburg who has great photos
of the steel mill.
I have driven on or hiked a fair amount of the Southern end of
the railroad ROW.
I am looking for a new sources of info on the H&BTM.
Pilotblue: Looks like a road trip to PA. in the works
Thanks to all.........Bill Miller
