Another CP Derailment east of Thunder Bay, Ontario
Author: SOO6007

Around 12:30pm EST Saturday, CP eastbound train #556 (Winnipeg to Montreal freight) derailed somewhere around mile 66 Nipigon Sub, about 60 miles east of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Roughly 36 cars were involved which fouled the adjacent CN Kinghorn Sub between Red Rock and Nipigon. The train was powered by CP SD40-2's #6053, #6010, and SOO SD40 #748 and was carrying mostly lumber and grain. There were no known injuries reported and estimated track passable is Monday sometime. This accident follows a previous 57-car derailment about 30 miles further west at "Bowker" back on January 9th which resulted in the two crew members losing their jobs.

CP isn't making a comment on the exact reason for dismissal, but speculation is that the engineer may have been 'speeding' or "not following proper train handling procedures". I'm not sure why they dismissed the conductor, but the union was apparently going to fight to get his job back. That's about all I know right now.

Sounds like the CP "family plan" was in effect with the first train derailment and will be in effect with this second derailment too. The CP terminal manager in charge of the Thunder Bay region is a guy from Montreal who use to run that terminal. Hopefull the conductor in the first derailment will get his job back after all of the UTU and CP red tape, etc., and considering how these things go, look for the conductor to be back on the job in 6 to 12 months time if all goes in his favor. As for the second train derailments crew, who knows what will happen, but I can guarantee the minimum they will be facing will be lots of demerrits and statements. At least nobody was physically hurt in these accidents.
