Eastern Railroad Discussion > Norfolk Southern F-unitsDate: 10/27/12 20:21 Norfolk Southern F-units Author: SantaFeRuss A few threads down inspired me to ask a couple of questions about the NS F-units.
(1) Have these F-units been rebuilt in-kind, i.e. rebuilt to F7 standards with 1500 hp EMD 567 prime movers, or F7 or F9 units with 645 or 710 components and upgraded to 2000 hp per unit (F38-2 or -3)? (2) Has Norfolk Southern ever used these units on freight? If so, anyone have photos? Thanks for any info and photos. SantaFeRuss Date: 10/27/12 20:44 Re: Norfolk Southern F-units Author: DoctorThunder Rebuilt by MARC in the 80s to what is essentially f38-2 standards. They have never been used to pull freight to my knowledge.

The 710 assembly's will fit in the 645 block. They just need a spacer on top of the block to make up for the extra stroke.
