A fabulous day roaming around Virginia! 11/11/2012
Author: Samuel

Photo 1: I started off the day by heading north to Arcadia/Solitude, VA situated along N&W's former Roanoke to Shenandoah mainline to photograph this years NRHS sponsored Amtrak excursion. It rolled through the beautiful scene just minutes after the sun rose above the mountains illuminating the photo.
Photo 2: Minutes later, NS 38Q rolls north through Arcadia, VA with a long manifest train bound for Enola, PA led by a pair of newer SD70ACe's.
Photo 3: After cresting Starkey Hill just a mile behind, NS 756 now rolls downhill toward Winston Salem, NC as he snakes along between Starkey and Wright, VA with the Wabash heritage unit second in command.

Photo 4: Continuing its journey south, NS 756 is now pictured rolling through the quaint community of Boones Mill, VA as it passes the endangered depot that is slated to either be torn down or relocated in the next year...
Photo 5: After meeting 756 a few miles to the south situated at Wirtz, NS 67N blasts north through Boones Mill and past the old N&W station that has definitely seen better days.
Photo 6: NS 67N rolls through downtown Roanoke, VA as the crew aboard only has two miles left before ending their trek that started out at Winston Salem, NC early that morning.

Photo 7: NS 787 begins its assault on Christiansburg Mountain as it negotiates the steepest section of the hill situated in this S curve at Shawsville, VA.
Photo 8: Getting down and dirty on Christiansburg Mountain.... Two EMD's struggle to keep this hopper train rolling uphill as they emerge from the west portal of Montgomery Tunnel on a balmy November afternoon.
Photo 9: NS 272 roars uphill through Merrimac, VA situated roughly a mile west of the crest of the hill as two older EMD's power the long autorack train east toward Roanoke on the former Virginian Railway.

Photo 10: Just minutes behind 272, NS 44V now nears the end of its assault on Merrimac Hill with a pair of Union Pacific AC4400CW's doing the honors.

That's all for now and hope you enjoyed viewing!

Wonderful images, Samuel. The first two with the pond and the mountains in the distance are breathtakingly beautiful, and superbly show the train in the context of marvelous scenery. Outstanding! Thanks so much for sharing them with us!

I always enjoy you work but I think the location for the first 2 shots takes the cake. Beautiful.

Great photos again Samuel! My grandmother was born at Purgatory mountain, not too far from Arcadia/Solitude - really.
Now I'm far, far away in Gig Harbor WA. Thanks for posting those beautiful early morning shots.

The Roanoke Chapter trips included a former Southern Railway "Crescent" series sleeper-lounge. Does anyone know which car it was?
