Amtrak P050, The Cardinal, hit a motorist around 4:55 pm yesterday in Bealton, VA.

The driver pulled into the path of the eastbound train despite clear weather and excellent sight distance down a long stretch of tangent double track. The picture below shows the stop-sign crossing (red x) on the left where the accident occurred. The green "o" on the right is an alternative crossing guarded by lights and gates. The train was travelling from left to right, probably in excess of 60mph.It is quite possible the setting sun hindered the driver's vision.
