Pan Am Portland-Selkirk Run-through with CSX 120912
Author: JPB

In photo 1, POSE crawls southwest on Pan Am Railway across Barnum Rd near the intersection with Patton Rd in the former Ft Devens army base at Ayer, MA (now the Devens industrial park). After picking up 18 "Barbers" (interchange point with P&W/CSX 30 miles away in Worcester) in Ayer's revitalized Hill yard, POSE sits at the end of the Harvard station block awaiting paperwork reconciliation. Approximately an hour later, POSE trundles across Neck Rd in Lancaster, MA. PAR is investing much MoW (ballast, ties, and re-built crossings) into the Worcester main. SEPO/POSE have lengthy consists carrying not only Maine paper traffic but also Irving traffic to/from New Brunswick via SJPO/POSJ (St John-Portland). SEPO/POSE are also temporarily handling Everett MA produce traffic while the MBTA repairs the Grand Jct line bridge over the Charles River near Beacon Park over which CSX has trackage rights.

Thanks for the images and information. Thirty years ago I sang tenor with the Harvard (the town, not the U.) Choral Society. Gerry
