Eastern Railroad Discussion > NS puts on a show, Blackstone, VA 12/15/12Date: 12/17/12 10:17 NS puts on a show, Blackstone, VA 12/15/12 Author: RNinRVR This past Saturday, after I had done my video and stills of the new Norfolk train, I drove west to Blackstone, VA to shoot what the NS had running on the old N&W. It was a very good day with 8 trains past me in 6 hours. For someone who spends most of her time on the CSX, NS was a nice break. The weather was a bit strange during the day. It started off with this low cloud deck, then finally cleared to almost no clouds and by the time I left the clouds were coming back.
The first train by me was hopper train S11 with SD70ACe 1041 leading shown here as it passes. The trailing unit on this train was ES44AC 8040. Leading was D9-40CW 9805 shown as he leads his train around the curve to my east. Now this D9 is right by me as I grab its picture. The trailing ES409DC 7583 is shown as the train passes west, well actually south west at this point. The final well cars of 234 pass east, this train had mostly domestic containers on it including a lot of H B Hunt. This final shot of 234 shows it headed around the curve just east of my location. Leading was the 1058.
The trailing unit was the 1043. This next shot shows the last of the full hoppers passing mp115. Trailing is another ACe 1063, so again all ac power. 810 is by me with an almost clean FRED on the rear. Here is the 2619 as he passes me. Trailing of this empty grainer is D9-40CW 9109. By now the sun was shining brightly and at the low angle expected a week away from the winter solstice so the shot to the south west have a lot of glint. Sharon Evans Glen Allen, VA Edited 1 time(s). A second D9 was trailing the 9109. The last of the colourful containers on 236 past to my east. It was another hopper train the 811, but the engines on it were wonderful break for all the newer power.
It was lead by D9-40C 8824 shown here passing mp 115. Next was another SD70M the 2628. Following the 70M was an SD40-2 the 3286, the old work horses of the railroad. All the units were on line but could not tell is all were pulling.
As the train was passing I noticed the sun was behind the clouds giving this nice effect. The last hopper has passed and the train heads back to the mines for another load. The videos for these at all at my YouTube channel "sharon evans". I have post video of 57K and 811 here in the next reply. They are rebuilding a number of SD40-2s and this is a safety cab for them.
