NS 34N derailment photos
Author: JET

Logansport, IN - occured at 9 a.m. The crew was not hurt. The truck driver was not hurt other than I suspect he lost his job today. Fortunately no cars derailed. There were loaded ethanol tanks on the train.

John:

Excellent picture, but the reasons for the derailment aren't clear.

I don't see a truck although you say the truck driver wasn't hurt, implying that a truck was involved.

From what I can see it's locomotives on the ground -- cause unknown.

Could you fill in the blanks about this?

Thanks,

From what I've read, 34n struck a semi flatbed trailer with construction roller on it that was blocking a crossing, shoving it several hundred yards down the track until it hit a lead for an industrial siding. That's when the units came off the track

when I see a piece of twisted rail..as in the one photo..it would appear to be a dangerous operation to cut it without worry of flexing back..what is their process for cutting this up and/or removing..

I was wondering the same thing about that rail. Lots of potential energy stored up. Glad that no one was hurt too badly.

Various reports indicated parallel State Road 25 remained closed to traffic until the bent rail was freed, due to the possibility it might spring out into the highway.

NS Train 34N's operating crew at the time of the collision was based out of Decatur, IL and worked to Peru, IN. The trackage was the route of the old Wabash Cannonball passenger train 301-304 which was discontinued April 30, 1971.

Regarding to the Spring in the bent rail.
I suspect they could chain the rail across the bend and cut the rail.

What say anyone ??

Not sure you could find a chin big enough to control that and I wouldn't want to try it that way. i have seen them put a dozer on top of the rail to make a cut in a rail that was bent, but not that much.

Even if you were to hold the rail down enough, you hope, where would you want to stand to make the cut if you were the welder?

Best to try to get the pressure that is bending it (the locomotive?) off it slowly rather than cut it.

I remember, I believe in the '50s, On the P&SF Slaton Division
somewhere around Slaton or Lubbock, the General Manager from
Amarillo was killed by the very same thing while a rail was
being cut..perhaps some 'old timers' can remember, also...
