While I am not from Quebec, I have to think that flashing red lights and a crossbuck, along with the yellow RXR sign preceding crossing are pretty obvious to anyone, whether one speaks English or not. Isn't this one reason so many signs are "picture" instead of "words", like walk/don't walk? So that's no excuse in my opinion. Date: 01/25/13 06:26 Re: language barrier Author: DPKrause mp208 Wrote:

I don't understand french, yet somehow when I trucked into Quebec I still managed to figure out what the crossing signs meant. Guy's a moron... Before I learned basic French, many Quebecois would give me a shrug when I asked a question in English. When I then said je suis americain (I'm an American) every single person was delightful, friendly, and able to provide some basic guidance, etc. I've since learned enough French to enjoy the province even more. Nice people, good food, good beer. Date: 01/25/13 08:26 Re: language barrier Author: wabash2800 The French can be stubborn...<G>

Nice people, good food, good > beer. That's been my experience, too. On driving trips from Chicago to Maine, we'd go through Canada (about 100 miles shorter, fewer tolls) and a required stop was the Kentucky Fried Chicken (Poulet Frite a la Kentucky) in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Showing off my French one day to the pretty blonde girl behind the counter, I asked for "boite economique, s'il vous plait" (the thrift box, please). She replied with some rapid French that I didn't quite catch. I must have looked puzzled, because she said, "Do you want fries with that?"
