NS bridge at CP 509 Calumet River is out
Author: GenePoon

May as well mention it here; discussion is already underway on the Passenger board.

Reportedly the Norfolk Southern lift bridge over the Calumet River, near the Illinois-Indiana
border (CP 509), has malfunctioned and is closed to rail traffic. Two eastbound Amtrak trains
are stuck in Chicago and one westbound Amtrak train is stuck east of the bridge.

no idea when this bridge was erected, anyone know?? know the nickle plate bridge over the calumet is not that old 1950's maybe. do know it gets stuck occasionally, used to call out the roundhouse foreman to unstick it.the cwi bridge was rebuilt in early 1970's after being struck by a barge.now sitting idle. south shore just got a new fancy bridge[ would like a pic of it]

Maybe their 2013 capital plan, referenced later, has some money for a new bridge. Amazing how the railroads today are still able to use bridges that were built so long ago.

There is no reason for a new bridge.

The NS Cummings drawbridge is a replacement for an older swing bridge. It was opened in 1970. This is on the NKP line just south of Calumet Yard.

I think you will find that this lift bridge (one of four at the site once upon a time, now the only one in service) is at least 110 years old.
