Isn't that the 9992 one of the passenger units for the office cars?

I ques they should have numbered it P936-14 and not P936-13. It only had one mile to go.

Yes.

Would something like this be a cut of cars that were fairly heavy and the switcher locked the brakes, or otherwise not able to stop and slid into the second unit?

Could be a million things....stupidity seems to be at the top of the list. Quite simple. One train had authority in that area, the other didnt....unless 9992 picked a switch..... Could also be that the butthead was operating in RCO mode and maybe went outside of its RCO zone.

Too bad the pix didn't also show the switch points so we could see which way they were lined.

Not likely, if the loco loses contact with the handheld control unit the brakes are applied and the train stops.
Most likely the operator misjudged his headroom. Anyway somebody's about to be called up on the carpet!!! LOL

Exceeding the zone isn't how far radio range is, it's how far the RCO unit is given permission to operate. If it was an RCO unit, and the operator's zone extended to the switch, it is very possible that he misjudged the length of the cut and pulled to far. I believe a similar situation occurred in BNSF's Denver yard last year. One of the many reasons I don't like RCO units.

Practice safe CSX!!!

Is that switcher equipped for Remote Control? I could't really tell by the picture.

Just a follow up: All four CSX F40PH-2's were in Waycross today and 9992 was damaged on the fuel tank area and was awaiting to be put in the shop. CSX 9999 was also damaged in the incident and will require some repair as well.
