Eastern Railroad Discussion > PRR Baldwin...Date: 12/15/01 22:07 PRR Baldwin... Author: lackawanna2001 From the early 60s, roster shot, one of nine Pennsylvania RR's Baldwin AS616 #8973 aquired by PRR in 1951. Later under PC, the 2400 hp unit was renumbered as 6973. Location of photo unknown.
-Rick Glosser Date: 12/16/01 09:18 AS616 = 2400hp???? Author: SD80MAC4100 I think the 16 in AS616 means 1600HP
Date: 12/16/01 10:19 RE: AS616 = 2400hp???? Author: lackawanna2001 According to the two roster books I have, the AS-616 were 2400 hp.
Rick Date: 12/16/01 10:28 RE: AS616 = 2400hp???? Author: MRSLIDES As SD80 stated: Baldwin AS616 is a "6" axle "16" 1600 HP unit.
Date: 12/16/01 10:50 RE: AS616 = 2400hp???? Author: SD80MAC4100 If it were 2400 HP it would have been an AS624-----the First of the 2400 HP unit road switchers built with just one prime mover in the hood were the Fairbanks-Morse H24-66, The world reknown "Trainmaster"------and several Years after the TM was the EMD SD24-----all of which had the "24" prominently displayed in their model number.
Date: 12/16/01 12:09 RE: AS616 = 2400hp???? Author: gcw AS616s were definitely 1600 HP as delivered by Baldwin, however that does not mean that the PRR units were rebuilt with 2400 HP prime movers sometime during their career. I cannot find any historical record of this and I don't think it was ever done, but I cannot rule it out.
Date: 12/16/01 15:21 RE: AS616 = 2400hp???? Author: lackawanna2001 They could have, then again there could have been a misprint in the roster book. Found a few of those before. I wasn't really sure, I too knew the number meant the rate of hp. Penny had many locomotives and did many changes on them. Thanks all.
Rick Date: 12/16/01 17:57 RE: AS616 = 2400hp???? Author: MRSLIDES you can not re-write history: no PRR AS616s were re-engined to 2400h.p.
Date: 12/18/01 07:25 RE: PRR Baldwin... Author: eja According to Pennsy Power II (p 244) a Baldwin AS616 (Pennsy Class BS616ms) is indeed 1600 horsepower.
