I don't know what it is but the Bakken crude is a totally different than in the imported crude from overseas. is highly volatile apparently highly combustible where it can BLEVE like LPG / LNG / Ethanol

Well....at least the industry is being proactive, on this particular issue. A smart move on their part. Perhaps it will keep the proverbial camel's nose (re. U.S. Congress) out from under the proverbial tent. The industry should be so lucky.

A sixty mph crash is all it takes to get it going.

The cost of the crude business just took the first little jump. More to come.

Yes

A good offense is probably the best move in this case.

Making DOT-111A tank cars the only approved carriers for the most volatile crudes would probably be helpful, too. There are lots of places (Eagle Ford, Utica, etc) where crude is generally much less volatile.

Phasing out older or unshielded cars over five years would probably be a good idea, too.

Any enclosed container can BLEVE.

Or we could build pipelines which are safer and cheaper to operate and can move more crude than trains can, but I know, NO POLITICS.
