Eastern Railroad Discussion > W&LE all Tiger Stripes on the Westland BranchDate: 07/18/14 04:40 W&LE all Tiger Stripes on the Westland Branch Author: jmbreitigan Yesterday I went for another walk along the Westland Branch where the W&LE hauls Marcellus gas products out of Mark West Liberty's Houston Rail yard ( Westland, PA. ). WE 643 was getting ready to leave the yard. A little later in the day than usual. After a "S" turn coming up out of the yard there is a long strait uphill climb with great lighting in the late afternoon. Train is slow and the lead units are working pretty good up this grade. I really like the sound of these older EMD's. I cut some out of the middle of the video. Sorry about the shake at the beginning, hard to hold my iPhone steady with the wind blowing. This run sure is a hard run to nail down as to when it will show up. This was a pretty long string of tank cars for this run. I guess at least 50 plus cars. By the time the end unit, W&LE #101 got to me the front end was already over the summit near Johnson road and heading downgrade towards the route 50 RR crossing..

Eastbound train 212 had 4018, 6385, and around 120 tankcars, and they met a Rook Yard crew at the George transfer, which had the 112, 101, and two buffer cars. They then assembled the train at George to go down the branch to Westland, without taking the tankcars to Rook, where there is very little room at the moment.

Of all the trains I have seen leaving I believe I have seen the helper out of idle just once. john Date: 07/18/14 19:40 Re: W&LE all Tiger Stripes on the Westland Branch Author: railanchor If most of the train is over the top of the grade, the momentum would probably keep it's speed up and the helper might not be required then. It would be set to idle and just be along for the ride, as you said.
BTW, Nice video! Tim Date: 07/20/14 05:39 Re: W&LE all Tiger Stripes on the Westland Branch Author: jim6300loco Neat video.
Jim Date: 07/20/14 09:07 Re: W&LE all Tiger Stripes on the Westland Branch Author: Poker2662 In this case, the engine on the end is primarily used for leading the train east toward Rook so they don't have to shove the train east with a conductor riding on the last car the whole 30 miles.
